The Trucker Shortage is NOT a Myth! The Trucker Shortage is REAL! There is a Major Trucker Shortage with truck driving schools still not at full capacity. The Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse has made the situation worse, and the aging trucker demographic is not helping one bit.
Many people didn’t know that March 2020 saw 33,500 more jobs added than March 2021 even though we’ve seen an increase in jobs added from February 2021 to March 2021. Currently, truckers are told to expect more flatbed jobs to open. Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Trucking jobs are expected to only grow at 2% over the decade of 2019 – 2029. This makes it the slowest growth of any job sector.
The average age of a for-hire OTR trucker is 46 years old and the median age of the U.S. labor force is 41.9. This might not seem like a big deal but it’s huge and this is part of what’s causing the trucker shortage in America.
Basically truckers are being swapped around and recycled through the different trucking companies. Carriers are increasing CPM pay to entice truckers to hire on and to help retain those already employed. It’s been said that truck driver hiring will be the biggest challenge of this decade.
