In the past, many companies didn’t do the best job with employee engagement. If the workers did something meticulous, like data entry, they might have found the company’s policies to be as tedious as the work itself.
In the modern era, many businesses understand that worker motivation is critical. Motivated employees are happy employees, and there are many creative ways that bosses and managers can create that environment.
Let’s go over a few ways that company or department heads can keep their workers invested in what they’re doing.
You Can Ask Them if They Know Suitable Candidates for Open Positions
Every company must deal with the question of recruiting employees vs. finding the right fit. You can always appear at a job fair if you have some positions to fill. You can also look at profiles on Indeed, Monster, and LinkedIn to see if you notice anyone suitable.
However, you can also use a completely different tactic in some instances. You might already have some employees who have been with the company for quite a while. You trust them, and you trust their recommendations.
You can ask them if they know of anyone with the necessary skill set who might fit some of the open positions you have. They may know friends, relatives, or other individuals with whom they’ve worked in the past.
If they can suggest some suitable individuals and you hire them, that means more of your employees can work with people who they already know and like. That can often boost their morale and keep them more engaged.
You Can All Meet for Happy Hour on a Friday Afternoon or Evening
Assuming you have primarily or exclusively employees aged 21 and older, you can tell them that if they all work very hard that week, you’ll pay for the first couple of rounds at Happy Hour at a nearby bar or restaurant. You might all get together after work at a TGI Friday’s if there’s one in the neighborhood, or you could choose to support a local, non-chain restaurant or bar instead.
This is a great way for everyone to unwind and spend some time together outside of a work setting. Also, if you’re a boss or company head and you go out and socializes with your workers, it shows that you want them to feel comfortable around you.
You Can Have Pizza or Tacos for Lunch One Day Per Week
You might also have one day per week when you pay for the whole office crew to get some tacos, pizza, or Chinese food from a local restaurant. You can pay for the establishment to deliver the food, and that day the whole staff doesn’t have to bring their lunches to work.
It’s that sort of thing that keeps workers happy, since, like the bar drinking adventure once per week, they’ll learn to look forward to that one particular weekday. It’s a transparent attempt to promote worker loyalty, but employees do appreciate these sorts of efforts.
You Can Allow Your Workers to Dress Casually
Allowing your workers to dress casually can also encourage employee engagement. Gone are the days when offices would only allow button-up shirts, full-length skirts or dresses, ties, and professional footwear.
Many businesses now understand that unless you deal with some particularly old-fashioned clients, you don’t gain anything by making your workers dress conservatively. You can allow workers to dress in a way that expresses their style. As long as they do the work competently, there’s no reason to make them dress like it’s still the mid-1950s.
You can also let employees have multi-colored hair, visible tattoos, and piercings. Those sorts of things are so common now, and if you don’t allow workers who have them, you’re probably going to struggle to fill the open positions you have.
You Can Allow Remote Work
You can also retain your workers better and maximize employee engagement if you let your employees work from home whenever possible. You might feel like some of them have jobs where they need to report to a centralized location, but whoever doesn’t should not feel the need to commute to work every day.
If your employees can mostly do remote work, you might require them to come to the office only one day per week to talk about marketing strategies and so forth in person. If you let them work remotely at least some of the time, they will doubtless appreciate it.
