As we near the end of this excruciating year, many individuals find themselves reflecting on all that we’ve been through in the past 12 months thanks to COVID-19.

Our country faced new, unprecedented challenges that proved overwhelming and devastating for thousands of small business owners. But we also found ways to overcome these new obstacles and adapt to the strange, socially distant world we found ourselves in.

One thing that became abundantly clear in the last year is how important it is for businesses to be ready for anything. And for so many companies, that meant relying on the right software to solve the unexpected problems they faced.

How software saved medical practices in 2020

Back in March, when news of the coronavirus first began to break in the U.S., we were forced to make a lot of major changes very quickly to the way we interacted with one another, from mask mandates to social distance requirements and stay-at-home orders.

These things had to be done in order to save lives, but each change had its own set of implications for businesses and how they would be able to continue serving their customers. And of course, since the catalyst for these changes was a medical condition, the world of healthcare was rocked.

The medical community saw a telemedicine revolution in the first months of the pandemic. Video conferencing platforms were suddenly adapted to accommodate patient privacy requirements in order to make them more accessible to doctors and patients. Even legal regulations were adjusted to make it easier for these telemedicine systems to be deployed overnight.

The Software Advice website saw a 3,000% increase in organic traffic to our telemedicine directory between April and October of this year compared to last year—and patient preference is still driving continued telemedicine use for a lot of practices.

Because medical practices went through such drastic changes this year, and because there are so many different medical software companies out there right now, we thought it would be helpful to compile a shortlist of the top medical software platforms that users and reviewers appreciated the most this year.

How we chose these companies

To create our shortlist of medical software providers, pulled FrontRunners reports for each medical-related category published in 2020 and built a master list of all the software products that appears in those reports.

From there, we noted which companies had products appear in multiple FrontRunners reports across multiple categories, and finally we narrowed that list down to those companies with products in at least three different FrontRunner reports published this year.

Top medical software providers

The companies are listed in order of how many FrontRunner reports their products appeared in this year, and then alphabetically.

Though each company on our list has multiple product offerings, we’ve pulled reviews information from the top product for each to shed some light on how users feel about these software platforms.
