People have their interpretation of difficult times, for most people – difficult times are just another excuse for their incompetence, for some exceptional ones – difficult episodes of life are the reasons to be successful. The ability to revamp the way of living and to absorb new skills is the key to a successful life. The story of Devil Truss’ Arvind is a tale of such a transformation.
Arvind was born in Rohtak, Haryana. His father was a small-scale civil contractor. Already struggling for survival, his father’s business loss further degraded their family’s fate. They sold their house and shifted to a single room house where Arvind lived with two siblings and parents – a family of five. At a young age, Arvind had his work cut out for him. Family’s dire strait demanded him to earn a living.
In the year 2001, at the age of sixteen, during education, Arvind started working as a daily wage laborer. His daily income of Rs 50 per day helped him meet his personal financial needs and support the family at times. Life was difficult but Arvind always remained happy with whatever he had, but, every so often, he got frustrated at the condition of his family. An intense desire to change the fate of his family was developing inside Arvind – He experimented with jobs, most of them were menial.
By the age of twenty, Arvind had developed some interest in music and befriended some local musicians. After the day’s hard work, he would join his friends and go out for DJ parties. DJing was a new trend in Rohtak in those days, people hired DJs at a premium for their events. Arvind found the profession of DJing lucrative – his interest in music infused the necessary passion coequally. The frequency of his visits to DJ parties increased, and very soon, he mastered the art of DJing. For almost a decade, Arvind continued to remain one of the most popular DJs in Rohtak and the surrounding areas. He earned money and reputation in equal quantity.
Though well-to-do as a DJ, Arvind was also keen on learning about new business areas. In the year 2013, Arvind had a thin escape in a structure collapse at a Ramleela event in Delhi. The accident apprised him about the need to use a better aluminum truss(structure) at such events. Arvind knew many people in the event management industry. He soon met a trader of aluminum trusses in Delhi.
On being asked about better quality aluminium truss, a trader in Delhi laughed at me and said that almost all aluminium trusses are imported from China and no Indian company can make such trusses. That hit me hard and I was determined to make better aluminium truss in India. – Arvind told KenFolios in a frank interview.
Arvind started researching on aluminum truss and spent almost 10 lac rupees in the initial research. After a better understanding of business, he took a business loan and set up a small manufacturing facility to create an aluminum truss. His first truss was ready after 9 months and he called the same trader in Delhi who had made fun of his idea initially. The trader advised him to showcase his truss at an exhibition in Delhi. Arvind transported his truss to Delhi and showcased it at the exhibition. His hard work was about to make headway, Arvind got a good response and appreciation for his product. Since then, Arvind’s company Devil Truss has been manufacturing and supplying to small-to-large events. He has had a clientele of many prominent and famous personalities in India and numerous event management companies. From political to corporate, and entertainers to philosophers – Arvind’s truss is strengthening many events. In 2019, Devil’s Truss received an award for the best trussing company in India at Mumbai.
The truss imported from China is cheaper but low on quality. Our truss is a perfect balance of price and quality. The same balance of quality and cost has helped us make a turnover of Rs 15 Cr – Says Arvind.
Arvind carries the same positive attitude even in the difficult times around COVID-19. His company has not downsized any businesses or sacked any of its employees during the COVID-19 crisis. Arvind feels that the situation will improve soon, and humongous work will flow, especially the work piled up during the lockdown.
Arvind lives life with a formula of two Ps – Persistence, and Perseverance. He feels that no matter how unrealistic your dreams are, persistence and perseverance in the right direction will move you closer towards your goals and enable you to achieve them. Arvind’s story is the paradigm of how one can beat all the odds with consistent self-improvement.
