Even the term “content” hasn’t always been as widespread – or as all-encompassing – as it is today, and its emergence says something about the internet landscape in 2020 and how much it is dominated by the creation and discussion of what we call “content”.

From the advent of blogging to the introduction of visuals in web content, from the rise of video to the demise of clickbait and the highs and lows of social sharing, content on the web has been through some major sea changes, and content marketing has changed with it. You could even argue that content marketing as a discipline came of age with the web: while content marketing arguably has existed in some form for centuries, the internet and its deluge of content has given rise to a new awareness of its power and importance.

Since the advent of the world wide web, what we think of as “content” has changed dramatically.

But while it’s one thing to know all of this as marketers, it’s another to be able to cite concrete evidence as to how content is evolving and changing, to point to research and studies that show these trends.
